SUMMARY:JAMMS feedback Session: Safety & Security
DESCRIPTION:On the 21st June just over 200 members attended the JAMMS session on Visitor Safety and Security at the Southern Sun Cape Sun. \nThe Chairperson of Cape Town Tourism\, and lead Chair of JAMMS\, Mr Enver Mally highlighted the importance of the JAMMS platform as a space for tourism professionals to raise pertinent issues and to have their questions answered. He highlighted the importance of planning\, trust and working together as a collective to send a positive message to the industry and the visitor. \nMs Wendy Masters of the Phoenix Partnership facilitated the session\, and also presented on “Trouble Shooting in Tough Times- Do visitors feel Safe and Secure in Cape Town?”. She highlighted the importance of having both planning and crisis management protocols in place before the occurrence of a crisis\, the importance of speaking with one voice and delivering the same message\, as well as the risks of ineffective communication. \nPhoenix Partnership \nThe DDG of the Provincial Department of Economic Development and Tourism\, Mr Rashid Toefy presented on “A New Approach to Tourism Safety”. He indicated that the goal is for Cape Town to be known globally as one of the safest places for people to visit. \nDEDAT Presentation  \nThe presentations were followed by a panel discussion. Panellists included Alderman JP Smith (Mayco Member for Safety and Security: City of Cape Town)\, Mr Solly Fourie (HOD: Department of Economic Development and Tourism)\, Professor Lucille Blumberg (Deputy Director\, Epidemiology and Medical Consultant: Centre for Communicable Diseases)\, and Mr Andre Van Schalkwyk (Table Mountain Safety Action Group) and Ms Lisa-Ann Hosking (Tourism Services Executive: Cape Town Tourism) \nPanelists addressed issues such as the increase in violent crime\, crime on Table Mountain\, the increase in the number of homeless people and aggressive beggars\, health safety and other potential crisis concerns within the Cape Town travel and tourism Industry.
